The Others

Standing mirror; Stainless steel, mirror, linen fabric, various embroidery thread

‘The Others’ take inspiration in the story of a woman called Navaranaaq, who caused conflict between the Inuit and the Northerners.

Navaranaaq started rumors in both settlements by claiming that the others were planning an attack. Fear overruled, and both settlements attacked one another, causing many lost lives.
After the battle, the Inuit and the Northerners discovered that Navaranaaq was the one behind the pointless conflict, and they punished her by dragging her across the ground, until her guts fell out, thereby painting the landscape blood red.

The ‘Subject’ draws similarities to some of the issues that exist today between two ‘camps’. And sometimes we forget that the others might not be the enemy, and they in fact look like our selves in many ways.

The backside of the mirror has an embroidered pattern; an abstraction of the blood red line that divides the landscape in two - in two camps.
