The One Who Feeds Us
Dining table: Glass, stainless steel and Greenlandic marble

One of the most sacred mythical figures in the Inuit culture is the ‘Mother of the Sea’. A woman living at the bottom of the ocean. The Mother of the Sea controlled every living animal and could maintain the animals if the people had disrespected nature or committed predation. It was not until the shaman of the village had paid the Mother of the Sea a visit, to comb her filtered hair for all the misdeeds of the people living on land, that she would un- leash the animals. The Mother of the Sea is one of the most respected figures in Inuit culture.

Finding inspiration in this myth it only made sense to me to make a dining table as a reminder of the one who feeds us. The tabletop in glass represents the water sur- face where you look down to the bottom of the ocean and see the Mother of the Sea. The table legs are more shaped like arms or her hair. The stone head stabilizes the construction as a way of representing her significance, and as a reminder of how we can take better care of this world that we are all so dependent on.
